The band takes its name from Huerta Street in South Austin where for years a core group of friends got together to jam and to party, sometimes hosting after parties for other local and traveling musicians after their gigs. About three years ago, the band made it out of the living room jam setting to back Kiko Villamizar doing mostly Kiko's original latin compositions but also some cover tunes and some of Quinn's bluesier compositions. MC Chac peppered various songs with his unique rapping style. A year later Kiko and the band parted ways. Huerta Culture kept its name and developed a new and original repertoire. The band continues to evolve as new musicians come and go and some stick around. The idea now is to fine tune the cumbia ska mix the band is known for but to bring in more blues, hip-hop, and various other elements. Huerta Culture is not known for having a traditional style or for playing cumbia or ska the way it is supposed to be but rather for having a unique blend of styles and for exploring and developing the talent and creativity of its diverse members. Huerta Culture is a band for people who love to dance to fresh original music and to hear smart fun lyrics while supporting the local world music movement.
