People are asking us what are you going to do now. Without further ado I would like to introduce our new commander of heavy artillery Generalissimo "Chris Alaniz." A.k.a. "El Tibiron", "The Hammerhead." The fact that he can actually play drums with his head is only the beginning of what's amazing about this guy. Agony Column has now officially been rocketed into a new dimension of sonic devastation and we can't wait to see you on the battlefield. HOORAA!!!!

Richie here, Its hard for me to speak for everyone... Man the 70s had the best of both worlds for me I liked Zep, Jimi,The Who, Bowie, T-rex, Mot the Hople, Kiss,Then I got the Cramps, Ramones, NY Dolls, Stooges, Blackflag, DKs, Minor Threat Thats later ya but still the 70s Moving on to the 80s was Mercyful Fate, Anthrax, and a band no one ever heard of in like 84-85, Metallica. Stuart turned me on to most of that stuff...I didnt really care to listen to it, but he could play it! Holy shit! That sounded really cool. Anyway, one thing led to another. Lately Im really into Little Stevens Underground Garage its an easy fix for me, and Im all about easy. So I'll try to add to this list as time goes on. Dont think that just because I left your favorite punk or metal band out means that I've forgotten em. I probably listened to them, or got loaded with them at one time or another, Just kidding mom.

Agony Column

Agony Column never exactly set the world on fire with their brand of "hellbilly" metal that rode in on the coattails of thrash and speed metal in the late 80s. This Austin based band was actually a bit better than many of the peripheral bands of the era, though not quite noteworthy enough to get a whole lot of notice. The band's debut, God, Guns and Guts is a moderately enjoyable slab of metal that has its strong moments, though the band's reliance on a basic songwriting formula keeps it from being a contender for 1989's "Album of the Year".

The band played up its southern roots, adopting such nicknames as "Devil Chicken" and "Bat Lord", though one would assume these guys had a better sense of humor about stage monikers than some of the Norwegian black metal bands that would emerge in the coming years. Of course, this is the only reference to Norwegian black metal in this entire review and let's face it, it's superfluous at best. Anyhow, Agony Column played a bit slower than some of their thrash metal counterparts, sticking to more chugging riffs and a touch of a groove. It should be noted they do not sound like any of the groove oriented bands that also emerged in the 90s. Vocalist Richie "Devil Chicken" Turner was truly far from gifted, yet he injects quite a bit of character into his thin, mildly growly delivery. The album's best track, "Cars, Sex and Violence", caught my ear back in 1989 on a metal radio show for its leftfield delivery. Another interesting moment is the blend of southern rock and blues on "Blackjack".

Agony Column’s self-proclaimed “Hellbilly Deathmetal Onslaught” began in 1987 at the stylistic crossroads of metal, punk, and double-barreled Southern rock. They were one of the few local acts that fit in seamlessly alongside both Back Room headbangers and co-op party art punks. Although vocalist Richie Turner, guitarist Stuart Lawrence, bassist Pawl “Crow” Willis, and drummer Charlie Brownell were an anomaly for their time, it’s easy to imagine them sharing bills with rebel raunch purveyors like Nashville Pussy had they formed a decade later. The Austin quartet initially signed with Passport, but the label went bankrupt before any Agony Column material was released. After signing with metal specialty label Big Chief, the band put out God, Guns & Guts in 1989. Between Turner’s lecherous screeching, Lawrence’s flying fretwork, and an all-meat rhythm section, Guts garnered widespread acclaim in underground metal circles on the strength of songs like “Bag O’ Bones” and “66 Six Guns (for Satan).” Their 1990 follow-up, Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles, featured a definitive cover of Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” along with battle-tested originals like “Hole to Hell” and “Crime and Punishment.” After a long period of inactivity, Agony Column released Way Back in the Woods in 1996 with Billy Dansfiell on bass. The band broke up in 1997 but played a reunion show in 2000. – Greg Beets

Bio
Based in the small, dusty junction town of Creedmoor, Texas (population 202) the creative duo Known as Alien Knife Fight craft their sound at all hours in their big, old 1930's era house/home studio, situated on 3.6 acres that they call Big Bottom Farm. Bassist/vocalist Monique Ortiz has been performing in duos for over 25 years, out of pure drive and necessity to perform unhindered by the lack of traditional rock instrumentation. Her first notable duo project, Bourbon Princess (1997), lead to over a decade of collaboration and close ties with members of the band Morphine. This includes the evolution of Bourbon Princess going from a duo to a trio with original Morphine drummer Jerome Deupree and guitarist Jim Moran, then leading to the formation of power trio A.K.A.C.O.D., with Morphine saxophonist Dana Colley and auxilary Morphine drummer Larry Dersch.

In 2010 Monique moved from Boston to Austin, met multi-instrumentailst Michael Howard and started writing and recording music together. With Mike switching from bass to drums, and taking the reigns on production and engineering at their home studio, they gradually shaped a sound heavily influenced as much by post punk and new wave, as by desert rock and psychedelic blues. The goal being to go well beyond the typical duo gimmicks and sound that often draw comparisons to acts such as White Stripes, Black Keys, and The Cramps. No. This was never good enough. Never dynamic enough. AKF go where most duos rarely venture: Firstly, they don't think about music within the limits of a duo. They think much larger. With her powerfully soulful voice, and unconventional lyrics and subject matter, along with her unique fretless bass and slide bass playing, there's much more here than a cute interpretation of punk and delta blues.

Bring in Micheal's primal, tom-heavy drumming (a la Adam & The Ants, Siouxsie & The Banshees), with the addition of specialized vocal and keyboard loops, and you have something far heavier and transporting than what so many duos offer. A dark, visceral, soundtrack for the times. An abstract painting from a dystopian future. Over the years Alien Knife Fight have drawn far more comaprisons to acts such as PJ Havrvey, Nine Simone, Queens Of The Stone Age, Can, Joy Divison, and Swans, than the acts people typically think of with duos. Currently AKF are working on a new record with producer Mark Deutrom, best known as "Mark D", former Melvins bassist. They plan on touring next spring, follwing the release of the new record. Monique also sings and plays bass in Mark's live vehichle, Bellringer.

A.K.F. have recently independently released a 5-song EP which is available on their bandcamp page at http://alienknifefight.bandcamp.com/

We don't have one.

Quote from Monique Ortiz: "These days duos are kind of a gimmick, a fad. I've been performing in the duo format for over 20 years, and it's mainly out of necessity; I didn't want the lack of right musicians keeping me from performing. Mike and I strive to sound much bigger and more dynamic than other duos. We aren't one-trick ponies by any means. And we aren't a roots / blues act, which is an assumption many make when they see that I play a 2-string slide bass. Sure, I like some early blues, but for the most part we are more influenced by hard rock acts, punk, and new wave.

Personally, my biggest influences are Queens Of The Stone Age, Birthday Party, Romeo Void, Skull Defekts, and Can, just to name a few. And of course, my long-standing, close ties and collaborations with members of the bands Morphine and Mission Of Burma have influenced and colored our sound greatly. Our rock sound is just a small slice of what we do: Alien Knife Fight is a creative partnership. Mike and I record a lot of instrumental, experimental music, which we hope, some day, will find placement in film and other areas outside of the typical rock-n-roll realm.

We are also filmmakers and visual artists working in glass, paint, photography and illustration. Currently we are working on a new record with producer Mark Deutrom, who is also frontman of another band I play in, Bellringer. Mark is best known as the ex-bassist of Melvins, and Clown Alley. He has also worked closely with Sun O))). We aim to release the record early next year, with extensive US & European tours to follow."

Animal Train was formed by Rich & CJ back in 2007 in Upper Darby, PA. We played around the east coast as a 3 piece until relocating to Austin, TX in early 2011. We met up with a drummer and started doing shows right away. We later expanded to a 4 piece adding a new bassist and CJ took over on lead vocals. Some have since hopped off the train but we still roll on doing what we do. We're still at it putting out music and doing shows. This is a labor of love we do this cuz we love to do it.

      Long Description

mid Tempo to Fast upbeat Comedic punk rock offering a delightfully refreshing audible orgasm with a twist of Originally fermented resonance for your face.

      Bio

Blake escaped from the primate's cage at the Brownsville zoo and hitched a ride inside an elephants ass up highway 77 through the drug checkpoint, eventually making his way to Austin. Watson was a bum who lived behind a local club in their dumpster. One night the original bassist was a no show so we asked the trash can tenant if he wanted to play some songs in exchange for a half eaten slim jim. ...."where the fuck do i sign" He said. Later down the road, the Government mandated we needed to diversify, so we contacted Sally Struthers and she eventually mailed us a guitar ninja with some severe Tourettes from somewhere in Asia?...um.. Philippines maybe...wherever. I'm not sure. The drummer is a former Rodney Dangerfield impersonator who was kicked out of a Hootie and the Blowfish cover band for performing fish pedicures on underage fans. So as it went, here we live stinking up Austin with our foul mediocre all original music which we play perpetually unrehearsed and over intoxicated. The "apathetic" Badnotes are available for some "new old Punk, Drunk as a skunk!"
